Speaking to Dominican journalists at his hotel while attending the International Climate Conference in Paris yesterday, Monday 30 November 2015, President Danilo Medina said that opinion poll results come and go and that his challenge was to work towards winning the elections next May 2016.
He said that he didn’t like talking about opinion polls, as they were just a snapshot of a particular point in time, and the elections were not until May. He said that his job was to cross the finish line first in May. He added that his team had to work as if they were in third place in order to be able to win the elections.
The President admitted, however, that he checks the results of opinion polls as they were useful tools for the job that reflected people’s voting intentions as well as the points of weakness and which areas needed to be worked on.
Medina said he was optimistic about the Climate Summit and when asked what a country as small as the Dominican Republic could bring to the event, he quoted Joaquin Balaguer who said that “one grain does not fill a granary, but it helps the other grains to fill it.”
