Savers have not had their money back

Depositors with savings in the collapsed Banco Peravia are complaining that privileges and favoritism are affecting the process of refunding their money.

Several account holders, including Jose Pena, Zonibel Gonzalez, Dominica Baez and Irsa Martinez, say that their deposits were valid and had been audited by the Banking Superintendence, but they have not yet received one cent, not even for the medicine they needed for high blood pressure and diabetes.

At a press conference yesterday, Monday 30 November 2015, accompanied by lawyer Zacarias Payano, the depositors said that others who deposited money have had their savings refunded from the Contingency Fund as established by the Monetary and Financial Code.

They said that they had contacted the Banking Superintendence assessor, Dr. Manuel Pena, who advised them to go to the Banco Reservas to request their statements, as they had not been validated by the Superintendence.

They said, however, that they had gone to the Banco Reservas several times without success and that is why they were now demanding the return of their savings and compensation for damages. Even though the Banking Superintendence said they would be paid, the complainants said that there was no evidence of that and that they were simply using delaying tactics.
