In a blunt reprimand to United States Ambassador James W. Brewster, the Archbishop of Santo Domingo Nicolas de Jesus Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez advised him to “attend to Embassy matters” instead of talking about corruption in the Dominican Republic.
The 79-year old Cardinal said that Brewster should attend to the embassy, and as his “wife” is a man, that he should look after the house. The comments were made in response to Brewster’s recent criticism of the country’s high corruption level and call for action to tackle it.
In addition, when celebrating Thanksgiving at the American Chamber of Commerce in the country, Brewster talked about the passivity of the Dominican people towards what the state did with public money.
In response to Brewster’s comment that anyone who did not like what he was saying should hand back their US visa, the Cardinal recommended that he was not interested in his US visa or in traveling to the US.
