National AIDS day

According to the director of the National Council for HIV and AIDS (CONAVIHSIDA), Victor Terrero, more than 20,000 people in the Dominican Republic are living with HIV and have no idea they have the virus.

He said that an estimated 69,000 people in the country are HIV+ but only 40,000 have been identified.

To commemorate World HIV and AIDS day there was a ceremony in the Presidential Palace yesterday, Tuesday 1 December 2015, where Terrero called on the population to get tested for the HIV virus. He said that the government had improved the access to drugs for those infected from 48% to 72% between 2009 and 2015 and that the number of cases had remained stable at 0.8% of the population.

The ceremony was led by Vice President Margarita Cedeno and included United States ambassador James Brewster and the Minister of Public Health Altagracia Marcelino Guzman.
