Only 10,000 of 55,000 get their cedulas

Central Electoral Board (JCE) press director Felix Reyna says that the department has placed the lists of beneficiaries of Law 169-14 in visible places at the civil registry offices nationwide. Of 55,000 beneficiaries, only 10,000 have visited the civil registry to get their birth certificates or ID and voting card (cedula). The law benefitted the children of foreigners who had obtained their IDs irregularly and complemented Constitutional Ruling 168-13 that clarified issues on who is due Dominican nationality. It is likely that a good number of eligible beneficiaries may have died because the law authorized the document for people born as far back as 1929.

Reyna said that in order to vote in the 15 May 2016 general election, the ID and voting card must be obtained before 15 December 2015.
