The Constitutional Tribunal has ruled against the suspension of a court order for the demolition of the Torre de Plata in the Los Cacicazgos neighborhood in Santo Domingo, which was deemed an illegal construction. The high-rise apartment block was built next to the Dominican Fiesta Hotel but was contested from the start by the Los Cacicazgos neighborhood groups that won most of the court decisions. The demolition of the nine floors of the residential tower is estimated to cost the builders around RD$40 million in losses.
The decision to stop the high rise marks a precedent in Dominican real estate, as it is probably the first case where an advanced construction has been halted by the courts.
