The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has announced the opening of a civil registry office at the Ministry of Foreign Relations located on Av. Independencia in Santo Domingo. The office will issue IDs and birth certificates to the beneficiaries of Constitutional Tribunal ruling 168-13 and Law 169-14 on Naturalization.
JCE president Roberto Rosario said the aim was to help people who for whatever reason could not or did not want to go to a civil registry office to get their documents to obtain them there. The JCE has already displayed the lists of the beneficiaries at all registry offices nationwide where the documents can also be obtained.
As reported, only around 10,000 of 55,000 people who benefitted from the law have procured their IDs and birth certificates. Law 169-14 ordered Dominican documentation to be issued to individuals who had obtained the documentation irregularly, providing that no intentional fraud could be ascertained.
Rosario told the press that the Ministry of Foreign Relations office was established after receiving complaints from diplomats who said they had information about around 1,000-500 people who had been denied the documents at civil registry offices.
