The results of the election for the president of the Dominican College of Lawyers (CARD) are being challenged by Jose Diego Garcia who was seeking reelection. Describing the success of Miguel Surun Hernandez, he called it a bombshell.
Garcia, who represents the Legal Dignity political group, which is affiliated to the PLD met with his campaign team to decide how to challenge the result.
Surun Hernandez, who was the candidate for the Institutional Union, supported by lawyers from the PRM was the official winner of the elections that took place across the country last Saturday, 5 December 2015. According to the results of the final bulletin, Surun obtained 5,806 votes for 40.17%, beating the existing president, Garcia who had 40.01% and 5,643 votes. The third candidate was Perez Volquez supported by lawyers from the PRD and he had 2,308 votes, or 16%.
Around 14,000 lawyers voted out of the 50,000 eligible to vote.
