According to the Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo, President Danilo Medina has ordered a feasibility study of the use of concrete to build the country’s roads.
The reason behind the study is that concrete is now cheaper than asphalt, and lasts longer as well as needing less maintenance. In addition, cement is produced in the country.
During a press conference yesterday, Monday 7 December 2015, Castillo outlined the growth of the cement sector and said that if the roads were well designed and constructed there should be no problem building them with cement.
Dominican Cement Producers (ADOCEM) president Gabriel Ballestas said that cement consumption had grown 53% of the last three years, which was unprecedented in the region, only exceeded by Panama. He pointed out that the increase was due to the government school and housing construction programs.
He went on to say that in 2012, local demand was 2.6 million tons, rising to four million in 2015, with an additional 1.6 million tons exported.
