President Medina launches new social program

Yesterday, Monday 7 December 2015, President Danilo Medina headed the launch of a new Project called “Making Progress Together,” a Social Policy Cabinet initiative coordinated by Vice President Margarita Cedeno, aimed at lifting 180,000 people out of poverty in the National District and another 13 provinces.

During the launch at the Presidential Palace, Vice President Cedeno said that the program focuses on local development, especially reaching out to young people who neither study nor work. The program aims to improve their living conditions and create small businesses.

She said that the program would be implemented in the National District and the provinces of Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, El Seibo, Elias Pina, Independencia, Monte Plata, Montecristi, Pedernales, San Cristobal, San Juan de la Maguana, Santiago and Santo Domingo.

The Vice President went on to say that 61,000 people would benefit from the food program: 71,000 students at primary level and 33,000 at secondary level would be supported to ensure that they attended school and 229,000 people would benefit from the Primary Attention Healthcare Units.

Also, 40,000 young people would attend training courses at Infotep and 7,500 homes would have their earth floors replaced by cement.

The ceremony was attended by Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo, Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta, Senate president Cristina Lizardo, the head of the World Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean, Margaret Grosh and the World Bank country representative, McDonald Benjamin.
