Foreigners leaving voluntarily

The Director General of Migration has revealed that more than 70,000 foreigners who were living in the Dominican Republic illegally have left voluntarily for their homelands.

Major General Ruben Dario Paulino Sem said that the foreigners who had left included Haitians, Cubans, Mexicans, US citizens, Peruvians, Colombians and Afghans. He confirmed that as instructed by President Danilo Medina, whoever wanted to leave voluntarily had been assisted in the process by the Migration Department.

He also confirmed that four Syrians, who had entered into the country on false documents and had not been allowed to stay in other countries, were still here. As there were no direct flights from the Dominican Republic to Syria, they were trying to send them to Brazil, but the Brazilian authorities were refusing to grant them entry, even though they would only be in transit.

He went on to say that they were speaking to several countries to try and get them a transit visa so that they could return to Syria, but so far nothing had been possible.
