A poll carried out by the Newlink for Telenoticias, Channel 11, has revealed that 28% of Dominicans prefer merengue, followed by ballads with 25%. Next is 20% salsa, 15% bachata and 12% urban beats. The pollsters made 7,122 calls, of which only 840 responded to the survey in full.
83% of those polled said they regularly listen to music, 76% said they listen to music at home, 7% when on the road and 3% at corner liquor stores and 5% at work.
When asked why merengue was in crisis, the reasons mentioned were lack of renovation by musicians, lack of support from the government, high cost of discos and the payments radio stations ask for in return for playing particular music.
