Las Terrenas power company asks for security

The Luz y Fuerza electricity company in Las Terrenas, Samana is asking the authorities to step up security measures to prevent the theft of transformers and other electrical equipment. The company said that this spate of thefts appears to have been helped by the increase in blackouts since the Superintendence of Electricity connected Las Terrenas to the public electricity grid.

El Nuevo Diario reports that the power company is asking customers to be on the lookout and report anyone stealing cables, transformers and water pumps that provide public service.

In a press release issued yesterday, Wednesday, 9 December 2015, Luz y Fuerza says that the prolonged power cuts that have affected Las Terrenas ever since the interconnection was ordered by the SIE, provide a perfect cover for the theft of cables and transformers.

The latest incidents occurred in the very early hours of Friday morning, 4 December 2015 during a total blackout when three transformers were stolen in the community of El Naranjito and Playa Coson and a water pump and its transformer were removed from La Guazara.

Luz y Fuerza revealed that it has issued instructions to its operational staff in order to support the authorities in finding those responsible for the robberies and identify the traders and companies that acquire this equipment for resale.
