Economist Franklin Vasquez makes the point that 80-85% of Dominicans working in the formal sector make less than RD$15,000 a month. His research on “Jobs, Youth Development and Wages” has found that there are very weak links between economic growth and employment in the country. He said that the full results of his research would be presented in March 2016.
“This means that the Dominican economy grows but does not create jobs. The figures are there, as we have had annual growth rates of 6% in the last 10 years, however, the average unemployment rate is still 14.3%. This shows that the labor market is rigid and Dominican Republic is not creating enough jobs or decent jobs,” concluded Vasquez.
