Priest’s suit may open another can of worms

Priest Manuel Ruiz’s defamation suit against several journalists could result in the exposure of some of the undisclosed evidence against the late papal nuncio Josef Wesolowski and fellow Polish priest Alberto Gil.

The evidence remained unheard after the Attorney General office had delegated the cases to the Polish judiciary in the case of Gil and the Vatican in the case of the ex-nuncio.

Now, the evidence may be presented because it is related to the defamation suit placed by father Manuel Ruiz. Yesterday, Thursday 10 December 2015, the defamation case was adjourned until February 2016 to give the journalists more time to prepare their defense. Defense lawyer Laura Acosta revealed that they have obtained the documents from the cases against Wesolowski and Gil.

Catholic priest Manuel Ruiz filed the suit against journalists Marino Zapete, Diana Lora, Franklin Guerrero, Altagracia Salazar and Juan Tomas Dottin Reyes in August 2015. Yesterday, Judge Teofilo Andujar accepted the defendants’ request to present more evidence in the case.

Lawyers for Father Ruiz said that the defense was trying to delay the case because they do not have evidence to support their claims. The defense team, headed by Laura Acosta, denied these accusations and said the priest was trying to prevent them from adding more evidence to the process. The evidence they will be presenting is that related to the child abuse case of former papal nuncio Josef Wesolowski and Alberto Gil, with the serious allegation that Father Ruiz knew of the Gil’s acts of pedophilia early on but did not take action.

On 5 September 2013, Manuel Ruiz headed a press conference claiming there was no evidence to incriminate Wesolowski and, speaking in the name of the Roman Catholic Church, rejected accusations made against the ex-nuncio who had left the country once investigative journalists were on his and fellow Polish priest, Father Alberto Gil’s trail. The later had also left the country at the time.

In August 2015, Ruiz sued the journalists of the El Equipo de CDN talk show and Marino Zapete of El Despertar, which reported complaints from community members in Altos del Pedregal who accused the priest of running the Movearte School as a business, despite the fact that it was built with government funds on government property. Ruiz claimed that the children needed to pass an admissions test to be admitted. The residents were complaining that the priest had denied admission to several neighborhood children to the school.
