Two dead in PLD primaries

The ruling PLD party described its primaries held yesterday, Sunday 13 December 2015 as successful, despite two people being killed when things got out of hand during the proceedings in Santiago and Barahona.

The results are due to be announced at noon today Monday, 14 December 2015. Preliminary results suggest that the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martinez, is in the lead in Santiago de los Caballeros.

Violent incidents during the primaries left two people dead, Erasmo Antonio Medina in Los Ciruelitos in Santiago and Yeral Perez in Pescaderia, Barahona. Eight others were injured in skirmishes between supporters in Dajabon and Loma de Cabrera, Villa Mella, La Altagracia, Ocoa and San Pedro de Macoris.

Some 2.6 million PLD members were invited to vote for 219 congressional and municipal posts. The posts for the legislators who voted in favor of President Danilo Medina’s re-election, including most of the senators and deputies, were reserved for the incumbents.

Speaking in the name of the party’s Electoral Convention Commission, Lidio Cadet said that in 98% of the cases everything had gone ahead normally, adding that he had ordered an investigation into the violent incidents.

On page two of El Dia, in the Cuentas Claras comment, the columnist observed that during the primary held on Sunday, 13 December 2015 “violent reactions and arrogance of money were apparent”. The writer states: “Political patronage was at its best in places such as the National District and the province of Santo Domingo and confrontations were the norm in places such as Santiago, Barahona, San Cristobal and Dajabon, to name just a few. Many PLD members openly complained that there were not even shadows left of the old PLD and there was no going back.
