The National Business Council (CONEP) has issued a statement about the setbacks affecting justice that it says have become a headache. In a press release, the leading private sector association states that there has been a deterioration of all the reforms to improve the judiciary, such as the creation of the Judicial Branch Council. Conep says that in many cases instead of meting out justice and guaranteeing the fulfillment of the law, actions are being taken in violation of the judicial order and especially in regards to ethical considerations.
The comment follows last month’s serious allegations of widespread corruption in the judiciary, involving the Judicial Branch Council and the presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice. Since then, there have been statements by the Attorney General Office of a major cartel operating in the judiciary issuing rulings in return for payments and/or political favors, without any steps being known to have been taken by the judiciary to get to the root of the serious problems. The judiciary scandal has reached new levels with widespread media coverage of cases involving judge Awilda Reyes, former Francisco Arias Valera, former attorney general Radhames Jimenez, Supreme Court president Mariano German, and complaints placed by judge Santa Moreno placing corruption in evidence.
“In the latest phase the Judiciary has been subject to an internal corporatism with notable political patronage and populist tinges that have opened doors to influence peddling which threatens the stability of this important branch of government. This situation is of particular concern when political influence is increasingly evident in the decisions of the courts,” stated Conep.
