Time to disarm the civilian population?

Former President Leonel Fernandez says it may be time for serious discussion about disarming the general public. Fernandez made the comment yesterday, Wednesday 16 December 2015, during the wake for the mayor of Santo Domingo East Juan de los Santos who was shot dead by a debtor the previous day. He said the horrendous crime should lead to a rethink about gun ownership, starting with a freeze on awarding new permits and reconsidering the applications already in process. He said that the civilian population was indiscriminately armed, which is one of the reasons why situations like this particular tragedy occur.

“A lot of weapons are held illegally but it may be time to review the authorizations that have been given in time to see if they should be maintained,” he said.

During the wake, Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul announced that next year he would propose the elimination of carrying of firearms. He suggested that this should be only allowed for people whose profession requires a weapon n security, military or police.
