184,816 foreigners legalize their status under PNRE

The Ministry of Interior and Police has announced that 184,816 foreigners (about 70%) of a total of 239,956 who applied under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE) have now been approved to legalize their status in the country. The plan mainly benefited undocumented Haitians living in the Dominican Republic. Deputy Minister Washington Gonzalez said that 53,000 applicants have still not retrieved the document. He warned that these papers would eventually expire and the applicant would then have to start the legalization procedure from scratch and at a higher cost. The documents that are being issued are valid for one or two years and need to be renewed.
