President Danilo Medina, First Lady Candida Montilla, former President Leonel Fernandez and his wife Vice President Margarita Cedeno led mourners at a very moving funeral ceremony for the late Santo Domingo East mayor, Juan de los Santos at the Puerta del Cielo cemetery yesterday, Thursday 17 December 2015. The service was preceded by tributes at the National Congress. Before being elected mayor of Santo Domingo East, Juan de los Santos was a deputy for the PLD.
De los Santos was known for being an efficient mayor of the largest district of Greater Santo Domingo and for having built the largest chain of betting stores in the country, Juancito Sport. He had been chosen to run again for mayor for Santo Domingo East in the 15 May 2016 general election.
He is replaced as mayor by deputy mayor Jeannette Medina Luciano.
At the same time, there was speculation the PLD could choose De los Santos widow, Berlinesa Franco to be the ruling party’s candidate for mayor. Another pre-candidate is Domingo Contreras, who had aspired to be the PLD candidate for the National District.
De los Santos was murdered on Tuesday, 15 December at his office at the Federation of Municipalities by a disgruntled air-conditioning suppliers.
