The only polling company to openly publish results, CIES International reveals that the gap between Danilo Medina and his leading rival Luis Abinader of the PRM has shrunk by 12 points. A poll carried out from 14-16 December 2015 found that Medina has 45% support, compared to 33% for Luis Abinader. 1,200 people were polled with a 3% margin of error.
Guillermo Moreno would receive 5% of the vote, Minou Tavarez 3% and Pelegrin Castillo 7%, while 7% are undecided.
The poll results suggest that a second round of the election would be necessary.
The respondents backed the alliance between the PRSC and the PRM. Andy Abreu of CIES says that Medina’s decline could be attributed to the recent administrative and judicial corruption scandals and incidents in the PLD primaries.
While in previous pre-electoral years the major companies had published their polls by November, this year the polls have not been forthcoming. The polls are commissioned by large business groups and by the political parties themselves.
