The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reports that 21 people were killed on the roads on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in 468 accidents, with 589 people injured. The COE reported 219 accidents involving 281 people over the New Year holiday from 2pm on Wednesday 30 December to 6am on 1 January 2016.
In addition 29 people suffered from food poisoning and 206 from alcohol poisoning, including nine minors.
The COE director, General Juan Manuel Mendez said that over the whole Christmas and New Year period, 41 people had been killed in traffic accidents, which was six fewer than last year when the death toll was 47. The number of accidents also decreased from 969 last year to 808 this year, a 16.62% reduction. Last year 1,294 people were injured and this year it was 20% down at 1,037.
General Juan Manuel Mendez says that compared to the same period last year, there were 11 more accidents, but fewer deaths.
The provinces with the most traffic accidents were Duarte, Santiago, Azua, Monsenor Nouel, San Pedro de Macoris and Santo Domingo.
Among the worst accidents were those that occurred in Azua, at La Gran Parada on the highway near Bonao, on the Bulevar Punta Cana, on the Laguna Salada road in Santiago, Km. 14 bridge to La Romana, Cruce de Friusa in Bavaro, Autovia del Coral from La Romana to Punta Cana, La Chiva, Santiago, El Limon de Jimani, Km. 14 in La Antena, La Romana, Duarte Highway, Santiago, Km. 20 Las Americas Expressway and National District.
