No drinking water in parts of Santiago

Santiago is experiencing problems with its water supply, especially in the south and southeast of the province.

Residents in Villa Liberacion, Bella Vista, Pastor, Baracoa, La Joya, Barrio Nuevo de la Herradura, Rincon de Oro, as well as Cristo Rey, los Jazmines, Pekin, Los Quemados, Matanza and La Ceibita, have said that they have daily problems obtaining water. Some residents say that they have not had any water from the Santiago Corporation of Aqueducts and Sewers (CORAASAN) for more than 20 days, and that they have to buy tanks of water costing between RD$40 and RD$60.

CORAASAN spokesman Dario Fernandez said that the problem was caused by a generator burning out in the Nibaje plant. However it should be solved in a few days, and by the end of the week they will be installing a transformer bought from the United States which will be able to supply 25 million gallons a day from Nibaje.
