Yesterday, Wednesday 6 January 2016 marked the halfway point in the Dominican Professional Baseball League round-robin tournament. The Tigres del Licey continued their torrid run by winning their eighth straight game and distancing themselves from the other teams. Licey defeated the Estrellas Orientales by score of 4-2 with excellent pitching by Ariel Pena, Mario Santiago and Jairo Asencio, in a game played in the Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris. With their brilliant 8-1 record they have a four-game cushion over the second-place ranked Leones del Escogido, that lost by score of 6-0 to the Toros del Este in Wednesday evening’s game.
The Tigres scored two runs in the fourth inning with a hit by Leonys Martin, a walk to Diory Hernandez, and RBI single by Joey Terdoslavich and a sacrifice fly by Rymer Liriano. The Estrellas answered with a single by Junior Lake who stole second base and scored on a double by Michael Martinez. The Tigres sealed the game with two more runs in the seventh inning, which came from a double by Anderson Hernandez, a hit by Ozzie Martinez followed by an RBI hit by Juan Carlos Perez. During this eight-game victory streak, the Tigres have outscored their opponents 54-19.
In Santo Domingo the Toros del Este, behind excellent pitching by Rafael Perez who worked eight shutout innings, defeated the Leones del Escogido 6-0, thus ending a four-game losing streak. This was only the third victory for the Toros in the Round Robin playoff format.
