The Ministry of Education has announced a 10% wage raise for 89,000 public school teachers starting this month, January 2016. The raise also applies to administrative staff, and Ministry of Education retirees who receive less than RD$20,000 a month. The announcement means an additional RD$7.1 billion in wages.
Minister of Education Carlos Amarante Baret said that an elementary school teacher will now be making on average RD$43,900 a month, a good wage in the Dominican Republic. Amarante said that in 2012, public elementary school teachers earned RD$26,259, which means that during the Medina Administration (from 2012 to 2016) teachers in the state sector have received wage increases of 67%, with accumulated inflation at 16% for the same period.
