Bad start to year for femicides

According to Soraya Lara, chair of the board of trustees of the organization to Help Cases of Mistreated Women (PACAM), seven women have been murdered by their partners or former partners in the first ten days of 2016.

She said the situation was a major cause for concern as once a woman decides to report her aggressor, she is at the highest risk of domestic violence for her own life, that of her children and the aggressor himself who could decide to commit suicide. She made the point that unfortunately the authorities did not appear to understand the degree of danger that women are facing.

Lara cited the numerous reports, studies and investigations that had highlighted the risk factors as a long history of physical and psychological mistreatment, threats, previous episodes of violence, pathological jealousy, alcohol and drug consumption, which increased impulsiveness and machismo, family and social isolation of the aggressor and the possession of firearms, along with other factors.

Lara said that not enough funds were available to apply the policies and procedures needed to fight domestic violence, and she hoped that international agencies could donate money to help protect women.
