Dominican diplomacy overseas to be improved

Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo and Foreign Relations Minister Andres Navarro have headed the opening of the Second Forum on Dominican Diplomacy “Multilateralism and Sustainable Development: A Promise of the Nation,” an initiative linked to the foreign relations strategy promoted by President Danilo Medina.

The inaugural ceremony took place at the Central Bank on Monday, 11 January 2016, and the remainder of the forum is being held at Santo Domingo’s Sheraton Hotel yesterday, Tuesday 12 and today, Wednesday 13 January.

Dominican ambassadors and consuls from overseas are attending the event with the objective of deepening their understanding of the key facets of Dominican diplomacy and enabling the Dominican Republic to achieve a new positioning in the eyes of multinational organizations.

Navarro said that 2016 would be the year when Dominican diplomacy is reformed and although certain measures have already been implemented in the sphere of international relations, there was still much more to do. He spoke of the way the country had overcome the criticism it has received over recent years and that that progress was being made despite these obstacles.

He stressed the importance of political dialogue with bilateral and multilateral organizations to promote business and investment, cooperation, culture and the national image.
