New conference center to be built

Foreign Minister Andres Navarro has announced plans for the construction of a conference center at a cost of RD$400 million as well as an underground car park at the Ministry of Foreign Relations in Santo Domingo in order to host the more than 20 international events that are planned to take place in the country this year. He said the center and parking facilities would be funded by the savings the Ministry has made from a reduction in the foreign service overseas payroll. The government has budgeted US$7 million for hosting the international events.

Speaking at the II Forum of Dominican Diplomacy 2016 yesterday, Tuesday 12 January, Navarro said that the savings made would also finance a new consular services system to be implemented during the second part of the year to help the offices supporting Dominicans overseas.

In addition he revealed that this year his office would also receive an additional US$11 million from the National Budget to finance an ambitious overseas agenda. This will include new salary scales and a restructuring of the foreign service staff.
