The president of the Academy of Sciences, Milciades Mejia is calling on the Ministry of Environment to take measures to remove cattle grazing in the Valle del Tetero area of the Jose Armando Bermudez National Park.
He said the Academy of Sciences is aware that residents in nearby areas such as Sabaneta, Juan de Herrera and Mata Grande are sending their cattle to graze in the area. He recalled that when Frank Moya Pons was Minister of Environment he took action to remove the cattle from the protected area.
Cattle grazing in the Tetero area and other national parks have a very negative impact: it increases erosion, endemic species are eliminated, and the feces bring seeds of invasive species that is also a dangerous impact for the conservation of these areas. “Our protected areas need greater surveillance and control,” stated Mejia, a former long-serving director of the National Botanical Gardens.
