Protestors halt traffic to Duquesa

Local residents have blocked the flow of garbage collection vehicles to the main disposal site in Duquesa for the second time this week. The protests are causing major delays in the disposal of refuse from the National District, Santo Domingo North and Santo Domingo West. The barricade and blockage of the road began at 5am and lasted until 11am yesterday, Wednesday 13 January 2016 when Mayor Francisco Fernandez of Santo Domingo North arrived on the scene and talked to the demonstrators.

The Mayor promised to address some of the demands made by the members of the Los Casabes community, including the installation of lighting along the main road, a cleanup of the local creeks, garbage collection and a cleanup of the local streets.

One of the community’s main demands is to be given 5% of the benefits generated by the Duquesa landfill/garbage dump. However, the mayor said that it was not possible to comply with this requirement until the National Congress approves a bill that guarantees the investment of the Lujan Company that administers the landfill site.
