The United States Ambassador in the Dominican Republic, James Brewster has announced the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will support building reading skills by reaching out to 200,000 students in public elementary schools. The US$20 million “Reading” five-year program will be implemented together with the Universidad Iberoamericana (Unibe) and the Ministry of Education. The schools are located in San Cristobal, La Vega, Valverde, Cotui, Santiago, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo.
“Reading and writing correctly are essential skills for learning all the other subjects and are therefore critical to success in the life of a child,” said Ambassador Brewster on presenting the program yesterday, Wednesday 13 January 2016.
Program director Laura Sartori said that “Reading” includes teacher training, school violence prevention actions, research, incorporating technologies and community involvement.
