The Estrellas Orientales defeated the previously invincible Tigres del Licey yesterday evening, Thursday 14 January 2016 as they struggled to be the team to match the Tigres in the playoffs. This was the Estrellas’ first victory against Licey in the 18-game round robin semi-finals.
The Estrellas are now led by Audo Vicente, the manager who in recent years took the Leones del Escogido (2013) and Gigantes del Cibao (2015) to win the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball League Championship. The Estrellas have not won a tournament since the 1967-68 season.
Greg Reynolds pitched a no-run first four innings, followed by four relief pitchers that were too much for the Licey sluggers.
Licey has a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. Its contender still needs to be decided. The Toros del Este is behind with a five-game difference, the Escogido with a six-game difference and the Estrellas with a seven-game difference.
