The Governor of the Central Bank is promising that there will not be an increase in the fiscal deficit in 2016, despite this being an electoral year. Political patronage has hit new records in past election years at the cost of taxpayers. Governor Hector Valdez says that the fiscal deficit should remain at 2.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He said that President Danilo Medina was committed to ensuring that the country does not spend more than was budgeted. Valdez said that according to estimates, the deficit would reach RD$75.89 billion, as reported in Diario Libre.
Valdez made the comment when interviewed by journalists during a mass to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Leche Rica yesterday, Thursday 14 January 2016.
