A recent study on Heart Risk and Metabolic Syndrome in the Dominican Republic (EFRICARDII) has found that 26.6% of Dominican population is obese. A sample of 4,976 people between the ages of 18-70 in the National District and most populated provinces was used for the research that has a margin of error of 1.5%.
The study was carried out by physicians Rafael Pichardo, Angel Gonzalez (Instituto Dominicano de Cardiologia), Wilson Ramirez and Petronila Martinez (Sociedad Dominicana de Cardiologia) and Felix Escano and Yanet Velez (Sociedad Dominicana de Endocrinologia).
Nutritionist Taiana Ubinas recently gave a talk at Max Corredores de Seguros to present the results of the study that showed that of total number of people classed as obese, 29% are women and 21.7% are men.
The research also revealed that 31.7% of the Dominican population is overweight, with 34.3% men and 30.3%.
