TSE clears Subervi over Collado

The Higher Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has ruled in favor of former Santo Domingo city mayor Rafael Subervi, who contested the PRM board’s announcement that legislator David Collado was the party’s choice for the National District candidate for mayor in the 15 May 2016 general elections. Subervi claims that PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader had promised him the candidacy.

The PRM said that they used a poll-based method that awarded the candidacy to Collado, who is best known for promoting entrepreneurship. The PRM says that the method is set out in Paragraph IV of Art. 54, paragraph II of Article 55 and Article 103 of the party by-laws.

The TSE ruled that Subervi’s rights to elect and be elected had been violated with the use of the polls method.

Although the results of polls have not been made public, the poll-based method has been widely used by the political parties to select their candidates for the 2016 election. In previous elections, major polling companies published their results in the media for the public to follow the popularity of the contestants.

As reported in Diario Libre, the PRM said it would appeal, saying the ruling was “absurd.”
