Electoral roll nearly ready

According to the preliminary voters’ roll prepared by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) following last weekend’s closure of the process to issue new identity cards in time to vote, a total of 6,723,239 Dominicans are eligible to vote in the 15 May 2016 general elections. JCE president Roberto Rosario said that this figure could change somewhat after revision by the political parties.

Of the registered voters, 50.85% are women and 49.15% are men. Rosario said that there had not been a major increase in activity in this country as the deadline approached but it was the opposite overseas where a large number of Dominicans collected their new identity card in time to vote.

He said that there are still 9,766 cases to be validated and another 8,179 awaiting renewal, as well as 55,876 awaiting their biometric data.

Finally he said that 41,000 minors were on the electoral roll as they will turn 18 before or on the day of the elections.
