Hamlet Hermann, who founded the Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) and served as its first director during what is widely regarded as its heyday, died after suffering a heart attack yesterday, Tuesday 19 January 2016 at the age of 81.
According to reports, he was driving his vehicle on the Malecon in Santo Domingo around noon and began to feel unwell, so he stopped outside the Adrian Tropical restaurant where he asked for help as he was suffering from chest pains. The 911 emergency service was called but when the ambulance arrived, Hermann had already suffered a massive heart attack.
He was born in Santo Domingo on 5 October 1934 and graduated in civil engineering from the University of Santo Domingo. He carried out post-graduate studies in civil engineering in the Dominican Republic and in economic planning at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
He is known for his active role in the campaign to restore the deposed constitutional government of President Juan Bosch during the 1965 Civil Revolution. In 1973 he joined the guerilla group led by Francisco Alberto Caamano that landed on Playa Caracoles in an attempt to overthrow the Balaguer government.
