The United Nations General Assembly has identified nine countries, including the Dominican Republic, that are not allowed to vote in the current 70th Session because of arrears in paying their dues. In the Americas, as well as the Dominican Republic, the list includes St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela.
The others countries are Bahrain, Burundi, Libya, Mali, the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu.
In a statement, the UN General Assembly said: “Under Article 19 of the Charter, a Member State in arrears in the payment of its dues in an amount that equals or exceeds the contributions due for two preceding years can lose its vote in the General Assembly.”
According to the UN, Venezuela owes just under US$3 million and the Dominican Republic owes US$2.1 million.
