The Central Electoral Board (JCE) says that it has carried out a thorough cleaning of the data in the electoral roll that was completed on 16 January 2016.
Dozens of citizens who died since taking possession of their new identity cards have now been removed from the electoral roll as well as those who died since the 2012 elections.
The electoral roll was compared with data on deaths not only in this country but also overseas and was crosschecked against deaths reported by the Ministry of Public Health and the payroll registers of the Defense Ministry and National Police.
They also checked cases where people had died but the deaths had not been registered, both in the Dominican Republic and overseas.
Several deaths were never officially registered as such, including several well-known personalities who died since 2012. They include Pedro Antonio Nunez del Risco, Freddy Beras Goico, Milton Pelaez, Francisco Munoz Mejia, Claudio Nasco, Mariano Jose Lebron Savinon, Rufino Linares, Louis Quinn, Miguel Antonio Mercedes Jimenez, Ramona Eunice Betances Soto, Leonardo Michael Flores Ozuna, Viriato Arturo Sencion Rodriguez, Francisco Jose Castillo Caminero, Roberto Rafael De Jesus Blandino, Gladys Gutierrez and Hugo Eduardo Polanco Brito.
Listin Diario revealed that in the last 19 years around 100,000 people who are still on the electoral roll have not voted, renewed their identity cards or asked for a copy of their birth certificates, but it is not known whether they are alive or dead.
According to JCE president Roberto Rosario Marquez, the final version of the electoral roll will be ready by the end of January when the electoral campaign will be officially declared open.
