President Danilo Medina has issued a new decree for all state institutions to work together towards preventing the zika virus as well as dengue and chikungunya. The decree follows the Ministry of Public Health’s announcement on Saturday, 23 January 2016 that several zika cases had been confirmed in the Dominican Republic.
The presidential decree sets out the measures the Ministry of Public Health needs to take in order to reduce the number of mosquitoes that transmit the virus and orders other institutions, including the Ministry of Defense, to work with the Health Ministry to ensure the plans are implemented.
There will be a national day to eliminate mosquito-breeding areas by fumigation and through public education next weekend, 29 and 30 January, with all national institutions working alongside the local authorities.
Today, Tuesday 26 January 2016, a meeting is being held for mayors on public education aimed at ensuring that mosquito numbers are kept to a minimum.
