The lack of jobs and economic slowdown in Puerto Rico is motivating more and more Puerto Ricans to relocate to the Dominican Republic. The number of Puerto Ricans traveling to the DR is difficult to pin down as they travel on US passports. Many are finding jobs in the tourism industry or opening their own businesses. Several Puerto Rican companies have set up branches in the Dominican Republic, offering attractive employment to their compatriots.
A report in El Dia lists the main reason as the robust Dominican economy, with strong growth in the tourism, construction and banking sectors.
The migratory trend also includes many Dominicans who had immigrated to Puerto Rico for the same reasons and now are returning.
The slowdown in the Puerto Rican economy is also having a dramatic effect on the number of Dominicans trying to make illegal boat crossings to Puerto Rico. The US Coast Guard reports that while a total of 1,565 Dominicans were arrested for attempting the illegal crossing in 2004, only 133 were arrested in 2014.
