Reporters from the leading Dominican daily newspaper, Diario Libre were recently refused entry to the US Embassy to cover the launch of a children’s charity project promoted by the Association of Major League Players and the United States Agency for International Development, as reported in Diario Libre.
Diario Libre says it has received support from the Inter-American Press Association, Dominican Society of Dailies, El Dia, El Caribe and Hoy newspapers in response to the matter.
As reported, the president of the Society of Dominican Dailies, Persio Maldonado described the US Embassy’s action as an attack on the free press and freedom of speech. In an editorial comment, Listin Diario said that the US Embassy had engaged in “absurd discrimination.”
On 21 January 2016, Diario Libre asked for an explanation for the incident. The newspaper says that it could have been in retaliation for the publication of a photograph that the ambassador’s husband posted on Facebook showing a group of men at the Embassy pool celebrating gay pride month.
