Luz y Fuerza, the private power distributor in Las Terrenas, is calling for an urgent meeting to discuss measures for improving electricity services in the area. El Dia reports that the area experienced 17 blackouts over the long weekend, affecting the service provided by small hotels in the area. While the service provided by Luz y Fuerza was expensive, it was reliable enough for small hotels to be able to operate without having to purchase backup power generators to ensure 24-hour electricity. Since EdeNorte took over, however, the service has been plagued by constant outages. Luz y Fuerza spokesman Julio Cordero said that the blackouts would continue because the demand exceeds seven megawatts. He said that the power transmission line built by EdeNorte to interconnect Las Terrenas could not supply the demand.
