Haitian ambassador visits border

The Haitian ambassador in the Dominican Republic, Magalie Magloire and Dominican Migration director Major General Ruben Dario Paulino Sem and General Carlos Manuel Aguirre Reyes from the Specialized Corps of Border Security visited the border region together yesterday, Tuesday 26 January 2016.

Speaking in the Haitian border town of Anse-a-Pitres, Magloire advocated for peace and honesty and said she believed that dialogue could lead to understanding.

They arrived in a private helicopter provided by the Army in Pedernales and spoke to the head of the Haitian Migration office in Anse-a-Pitres. Haitian protestors burned down the office several months ago during a demonstration against taxes charged in Haiti on goods bought in the Dominican Republic.

As reported in Listin Diario, Magloire spoke to people from both countries and donated US$100 to a young Haitian athlete who was planning to travel to France but did not have enough money for the journey. Paulino Sem made up the difference.

The ambassador also visited the Dominican Migration office in Pedernales and she then went to Jimani to see how the deportations were being carried out.
