Amidst stringent security measures, the Dominican Municipal League assembly delegates gathered to vote for the post of LMD General Secretary at the Hotel Embajador in Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 26 January 2016.
Johnny Jones of the PRSC, a long-time ally to the ruling PLD, was ratified in the post for one more year. The unanimous vote was cast by the 124 mayors present out of the country’s 155, with the ruling PLD party holding the majority.
The meeting started at 11am and finished some 15 minutes later when Jones thanked those present for the parties’ support for his candidacy and promised to continue working in favor of the municipalities.
Interior and Police Minister and ex-oficio president of the League, Jose Ramon Fadul, said that Jones’ re-election would allow the new mayors who will be elected in the May 2016 general election to vote in next year’s LMD election, scheduled for 26 January 2017.
