Dominican President Danilo Medina arrived in Quito, Ecuador on Tuesday evening, 26 January 2016 to attend the 4th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Yesterday, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 he took part in the general debate along with the ceremonial passing of the Pro Tempore presidency of CELAC from Ecuador to the Dominican Republic. The agenda at the session focused on the eradication of extreme poverty, terrorism, peace, and the economy of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Speaking at the session, President Danilo Medina pointed out that the drug transshipments using the region presented a constant challenge to the stability of the democracies and life of citizens of CELAC member countries. He called for a proactive approach, demanding that the fight against drug trafficking should emphasize prevention, public health, and systematic review of results in the upcoming summit on drugs to take place in New York City on 19 April 2016.
During the 4th Summit, outgoing CELAC president Eduardo Correa proposed that a commission of foreign ministers representing CELAC travel to Haiti to see the political situation first-hand and assess whether there was a place for a CELAC role there. Such a mission would be made up by representatives of Ecuador, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Bahamas.
President Medina returned to the country earlier today, Thursday, 28 January 2016.
