Group proposes delay of Electricity Pact

In a proposal made yesterday, Wednesday, 27 January 2016, the National Committee on the Fight Against Climate Change called on the Economic and Social Council (CES) to postpone the National Pact on the Reform of the Electricity Sector until after the next elections that will be held on 15 May 2016. The entities that make up the committee are asking the CES president, Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado to consider this postponement.

The CES based its proposal on the grounds that the beginning of the official election campaign on 2 February 2016 would be likely to affect the Electricity Pact debates.

They added that the government has to demonstrate its commitment to respecting the consensus of the participants in this dialogue and achieve public credibility through both gestures and concrete actions.

The CES told El Nuevo Diario reporters that after the scandal of an undisclosed concession of a contract for installing a 600MW coal-fired plant in Punta Catalina, the credibility of the governmental authorities, especially in the electricity sector, no longer exists.

The group also mentioned the PRM representative’s withdrawal from the current discussions on the Electricity Pact.
