JCE will share out RD $1.6 billion this year

Yesterday, Wednesday 27 January 2016 the Central Electoral Board (JCE) approved the regulations for distributing funds to 26 political parties, one provincial political movement and seven municipal movements that have been recognized by the JCE for participation in the 15 May 2016 general election.

The JCE plenary also approved the order in which the parties will appear on the election ballot papers. In the May election, the first box will go to the PRD, the second box to the PLD, and the third to the PRSC. The PRM, the party that polls have consistently shown is the leading opposition, was assigned box 14.

This year, the JCE will distribute RD$1.61 billion to the political parties. Of this total, 80% will go to the parties that obtained more than 5% of the votes in the last elections, equivalent to some RD $1.3 billion.

This means the PRD, PLD and PRSC will each receive RD$429,356,512.80. The other parties and organizations will divide the remaining 20% of this total. The breakdown is that 12% will be shared by the parties that obtained less than 5% of the votes in the last elections and the organizations recently recognized by the JCE. The remaining 8% will be spread out according to the number of votes obtained in the 2012 election. This means that the two leading opposition parties, the PRM and Alianza Pais, will only receive RD$12.5 million and RD$8.3 million respectively.

The JCE also announced that they would continue issuing ID and voting cards (cedulas) to citizens who have not obtained the new document. However, this provisional cedula will not be valid for voting in the 2016 elections.
