Dominican minor leaguer dies in motorcycle crash

Baltimore Orioles minor leaguer 23-year old Ramon Ramirez was killed in an accident in La Romana on Saturday, 30 January 2016 when the motorcycle he was riding with his girlfriend Karina Baez Reyes crashed into a Honda car driven by Javier Guerrero. Ramirez suffered major abdominal trauma while Baez suffered a broken leg and other leg injuries. Ramirez had played in the minor leagues.

Ramirez had also played for the Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican winter professional baseball league.

Ramirez, 23, played for High-A Frederick, short-season Single-A Aberdeen and Ramirez hit .286/.375/.357 in 32 games with the Orioles Dominican Summer League team that season. This past season, he worked his way up to high Class-A Frederick this past season after stops in the Gulf Coast League and short-season Aberdeen. He hit .143/.182/.143 in seven games with the Keys in 2015.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

Last month, another prospect, pitcher Houston Astros Jose Miguel Rosario Flores also driving on a motorcycle crashed into a Toyota Fortuner and died in the traffic accident.

“Our entire organization is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Ramon Ramirez,” Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said in a statement released yesterday, Sunday 31 January 2016. “As a member of the Orioles organization, Ramon worked tirelessly to make the most of his opportunity to play professional baseball.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and coaches as we mourn this unimaginable loss,” as reported in the Baltimore Sun.
