Under the slogan of “Union, Peace, Hope,” the ruling PLD political party has formally launched President Danilo Medina as its candidate for re-election in the 15 May 2016 general election. The proclamation ceremony took place at the Palacio de los Deportes in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center yesterday, Sunday, 31 January 2016.
“Once again, I am making a commitment to you all and have come to renew, plant more hope so we can continue to dream together,” he said.
He recalled the major successes of his first term, stating that 700,000 people were brought out of extreme poverty, that more than 800,000 Dominicans learned to read and write, that 865,000 families were supported by the Progresando con Solidaridad program under Vice President Margarita Cedeno, that one million students are enrolled in the extended school day programs, housing was being built for residents of impoverished neighborhoods such as La Barquita, el Riito in La Vega, Boca de Cachon, Mesopotamia in San Juan de la Maguana, the Metro line was being extended, RD$50 billion was being provided in credit for farmers, and thousands of kilometers of roads built.
“If Dominicans honor me with re-election, the sacred words of my second and last government will be peace, progress and social justice,” he said.
Medina announced that the three fundamentals of his next government would be:
Economic development with social development; innovation and building skills with education; and ethics and an unstoppable struggle for transparency.
Medina promised a digital revolution starting in 2017 when every public school teacher will receive a computer so that they are equipped for entering the Information Age.
During the event, President Medina also pledged to implement the “Digital Republic” Program, to provide universal broadband access. He added that the Information and Communication Centers that were launched during the Fernandez government would become a priority for his administration.
He announced that his next government would focus on improving family finances, reducing inequality, increasing formal jobs, investing in innovation and development, boosting citizen safety, health and education and greater transparency in public administration. He said that his new government aimed to create 400,000 new jobs in the formal sector and help the growing number of young people who neither work nor study to continue their education and find jobs.
Medina was applauded several times when he pointed to former President Leonel Fernandez, saying that “his triumphs when he was President were the torch that served to light the way to power to continue making progress in the country’s modernization process.”
